The course has three legs. The first leg is a 9.5 mile ocean paddleboard, which starts on the beach at Refugio campground straight off the beach from campsite 35. The paddle goes past El Capitan, Naples, around the end of Ellwood Pier, landing at Haskell's Beach. There are showers at Haskells, a grassy area, and a parking.

The run portion begins at Haskell's and runs straight down the coast, on the sand, passing Sand's beach, Devereaux Point, I.V. beach, Campus Point and on to Goleta beach at 6.2 miles. Goleta Beach has water, bathrooms, showers, etc. Continue down the beach under Goleta Pier, THROUGH the Goleta Slough, which should only be shin - knee deep, and onward to Hendry's beach at mile 11.7. Hendry's has bathrooms, showers, a restaurant, and a parking lot. At the parking lot, make a turn towards the mountains, going through the lot onto Cliff Drive. Take a left at the stop sign onto Las Positas. This section of the run is 4 miles of asphalt and traffic. (Sorry...) Las Positas turns into San Roque, and going through Foothill, you will climb up San Roque, hitting the Jesusita trailhead just past the Cater Water Treatment Plant. For the next 8 miles, beautiful trail running lies ahead,...and up! Approximately 3500' of climbing happens in these 8 miles. Jesusita goes up 3.5 miles, down 1, intersects w/ Tunnel Trail, where you will climb up to East Camino. Turn left onto East Camino Cielo, run the last 1.2 miles to La Cumbre Peak, where you will transition nto the bike portion.

The mountain bike leg takes you across East Camino Cielo, crossing hazardous Hwy 154, onto Kinevan, which intersects West Camino Cielo, which you will take past the Gun Club (the last asphalt you will see for 10 miles) and up to Broadcast Peak, the highest point in the challenge, at just over 4000'. From Broadcast Peak, descend down Refugio Road 17 miles to The finish at Refugio Beach at the picnic tables across the road from campground 34.
